Nettle Protocol: Multilateral Clearing for Machine Payments

Welcome to the interactive Nettle Protocol documentation. Nettle Protocol decouples high-frequency machine payment obligations from on-chain execution by continuously identifying and collapsing cyclic debts off-chain, settling minimal residual balances with sub-second finality on Robinhood Chain.

1.1 Protocol Overview & The Loom

In an autonomous machine economy, AI agents continuously consume micro-services: data feeds, GPU inference, storage, and specialized computation. Under traditional gross settlement, settling each micro-transaction directly on a blockchain requires 100% upfront collateral float, generates massive gas overhead, and causes systemic circular deadlocks.

The Core Invariant: Nettle Protocol aggregates cryptographically signed commitments into a directed obligation graph. By executing multilateral cycle-canceling algorithms, circular obligations vanish mathematically before touching the blockchain, conserving up to 92.4% in required capital float.

The protocol operates through four distinct phases:

  • Obligation Creation: Payer agents sign structured EIP-712 payment commitments off-chain.
  • Graph Clearing: The Nettle Protocol Loom continuously builds and validates the multi-agent obligation graph.
  • Cycle Netting: Deterministic algorithms locate cyclic debt loops and subtract bottleneck values.
  • Robinhood Settlement: Only net residual delta balances are settled via Robinhood Chain.

2.1 Quest 1: Unweave a Debt Cycle

Experience how the Nettle Protocol Loom dissolves circular machine debts. Below is a 3-party obligation loop: Agent Alpha owes Beta $450k, Beta owes Gamma $420k, and Gamma owes Alpha $370k.

2.2 Quest 2: Collateral Haircuts & Solvency

On Robinhood Chain (Chain ID 4663), participants deposit Paxos USDG alongside tokenized Stock Tokens (AAPL, NVDA, HOOD) to back their credit lines. Test how the Section 18 collateral valuation formula applies risk haircuts.

2.3 Quest 3: Sign an EIP-712 Payment Voucher

Autonomous machine payments rely on typed structured data signatures. Rather than broad token allowances, agents issue cryptographically bound vouchers that expire if not cleared within the designated epoch.

2.4 Quest 4: Crisis Shock Recovery

When financial contagion hits, traditional clearing houses suffer cascade defaults. In Nettle Protocol, if a 40% systemic liquidity shock occurs, the protocol automatically downgrades regimes and recalculates a pruned recovery netting plan to protect solvency.

3.1 Mathematical Foundations of Netting

For any clearing epoch with N participants, each bilateral obligation is denoted as O(i -> j). The gross obligation volume is the simple sum of all bilateral commitments:

Gross Volume: G = Sum_{i, j} O_{i -> j}

Each participant's true economic balance sheet exposure is defined by their net settlement position:

Net Position: Net_i = Sum_{j} O_{j -> i} - Sum_{j} O_{i -> j}
The Global Zero-Sum Conservation Invariant: Sum_{i=1}^{N} Net_i == 0
Because total credits identically equal total debits across the network, the protocol introduces zero synthetic credit or unbacked float.

4.1 Robinhood Chain Rails

Nettle Protocol is engineered for Robinhood Chain settlement:

  • Robinhood Chain (4663): Connects directly to institutional fintech liquidity and Stock Tokens, allowing agents to pledge tokenized equities (AAPL, NVDA) as collateral.
  • Paxos USDG: Standardized regulated dollar stablecoin utilized as the primary settlement asset.

5.1 Smart Contract Directory

Seven contracts are deployed on Robinhood mainnet. View their addresses and live configuration checks on the mainnet status page.

5.2 Technical FAQ

What happens if a debtor agent defaults during settlement?

Before an epoch clears, each participant's debit is verified against their pledged liquidity and approved credit line. If a shortfall occurs, the netting engine prunes deferred-priority obligations and executes emergency recovery netting, ensuring solvent counterparties settle without delay.

Can any ERC-20 token be netted?

Nettle Protocol is asset-agnostic. Epoch batches group obligations by canonical asset address. Primary settlement runs on Paxos USDG, with secondary multi-currency support for USDC and Stock Tokens.
